“Why Hymns and Not Hers?” -  The History and Stories Behind Favorite Hymns

Offered:       Sunday, 9-9:45 A.M.      Location:      AE 104

Beginning:    June 6, 2010 (No Class July 4 – Come to the Patriotic Presbyterians Class!)   Duration:  5 Weeks    Comments: Drop in class

Description:    Have you ever wondered about the inspiration behind our best known and loved hymns? Do you know which hymn is called the “Battle Hymn of the Reformation”? Well, wonder no more!  During this five week ACE class Adult Choir members will explain the interesting and often amazing stories behind many of your favorite hymns.  During each session you’ll learn who wrote the lyrics and melodies, listen the  tune and read the lyrics to two or more hymns...but wait, that’s not all!  Next you’ll learn how, when and why the authors created these songs that inspire, teach and comfort us in our daily Christian walk.  You can pick and choose  your favorites.  Drop by a single class or attend all five. To help you choose, here is a listing of the proposed dates and hymns: 6/6, “Blest Be the Ties That Bind”, “All is Well With My Soul” and “Just As I Am”; 6/13, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Now Thank We All Our God”; 6/20, “Amazing Grace”, “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Faith of Our Fathers”; 6/27, “How Great Thou Art” and “Be Thou My Vision”; 7/4, NO CLASS (special July 4th event); 7/11, hymns to be determined.

Would You Stand Up?

Offered:  Sunday a.m.  9:00-9:45   Location: W3   Beginning:  July 18  Duration:  6 weeks

Comments:  Drop in class

Description:  Would you stand up?  Ordinary people making tough choices – an adult Christian education class that will challenge you.  Each week participants will be given a sanitized scenario of a challenging world situation where a single act of participation might change the course of events.   In small groups you will brainstorm what you would do.  Class members will then get a look at the history behind a real world situation like Paul Rusesbagina’s defense against the 1994 breakout of genocide in Rwanda presented by Karol Giblin. Pastor Holly will offer the religious background and biblical passages to reflect on the situation and our faith call to stand up if we were in that situation. The class will look at a different case each of the six weeks where ordinary people had to make tough choices to stand up against evil.  It should be a great class that will challenge you and inspire you.  So, as an American and a Christian, would you stand up?  Come find out! Sr. High Youth are also welcome to attend this class.

Sunday Evening Adult Education 6:00 p.m. (September - April)

Disciple Bible Study emphasizes disciplined reading & listening to Scripture that results in biblically nourished persons committed to lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. Learners must begin with Disciple 1, but continuing classes may be taken in any order.

Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study is an overview Bible study from Creation of Genesis to the New Jerusalem of Revelations. The principle Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story.

Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into The Word builds on the biblical knowledge gained through the overview of Disciple 1. The emphasis shifts from the broad view to the deeper, more detailed view. Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts are reading assignments with appropriate passages from other parts of the Bible.

Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are - The word YOU in the title is meant to be heard both in its singular form and in its plural form (the community). Not offered in the 2008-2009 academic year.

DISCIPLE 4: Under The Tree of Life is the final study in the four-phase Disciple Bible Studies. The image of the tree of life frames the biblical story: in Genesis, in the midst of a garden, but off limits; in Revelation, on either side of the river of the water of life, with fruit to eat and leaves for the healing of the nations. Disciple 4 concentrates on the Writing in the Old Testament, Gospel of John and Revelations. Present through the study is the sense of living toward completion - toward the climax of the message and the promise pictured in Revelations.

There is a $35 cost for Disciple Bible Study Materials*

Wednesday Mornings at 10:00 a.m.

Easter from the Back Side (Beginning March 17, 2010)

Come join this study as we look beyond the traditional gospel scriptures to connect the story of Christ’s resurrection with other stories and scriptures throughout the Bible, including both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Class Facilitator: Pastor Holly Hoppe
